Caroline was feeling very romantic in this little seaside town:
We took a quick day trip to Sintra, a little town just 30 minutes south of us. There are castles to check out, a little historic town to walk around, and the botanical gardens, which is where we spent most of our time. Below we have Caroline preparing for the botanical gardens by posing next to some flowers on the sidewalk:
The botanical gardens were actually really cool to visit. Worth going. They are part of a big piece of property that belonged to an aristocratic family over 100 years ago. Their castle (in the background below) is now a museum:
Caroline has a thing for castles:
The best part were the "grottos." They were these underground tunnels and caves that typically had water in or near them. Here is the gang doing their Abbey Road interpretation on the path into the secret grotto:
This is what it looks like from inside the grotto. There were no lights inside- you had to adjust your eyes and make your way through some very narrow passages. At a few points, it is literally total darkness, and we had to form a human chain and slowly move through the little passages:
One of the passages led to what looked like a well that had been carved out with a spiral staircase. At the bottom of the well, we got into panoramic mode:
What's going on here?!?!
For lunch on Sunday we found a great little seafood spot. The smell and crackle of the charcoal grill were good leading indicators of quality. Aurel had squid:
Cam had sole:
Caroline had sardines:
Jon had grouper:
And it was all really good. Add a little sun on our backs after a nice surf session, and we were happy:
