Our journey started at the San Sebastián train station. After lugging all of our gear there on our backs, it felt good to sit down. The train was delayed an hour:
We had a private sleeper car for the 13 hour train ride to Lisbon. Laying flat is great. But don't get the idea that it was a smooth ride. Imagine 13 hours of lateral turbulence and train clanking. We probably got about 2 hours of sleep between the two of us:
The train station in Lisbon is not co-located with the bus station. So we took all of our gear on the city subway, including a line transfer. We had another hour wait at the bus station. Here is Cam hidden behind our mountain of gear at Campo Grande bus terminal:
After an hour on the bus, and feeling pretty stinky, we arrived in Ericeira and the weather was perfect. 72 and sunny. We are renting a place on Air BnB, and the friendly owner met us at the bus station to pick us up. He then took 30 minutes out of his day to drive us around town to get oriented. We hit several surf spots, including the famous Ribeira D'ilhas seen below. There was no swell to speak of, but it still looked really fun:
The water was clear, glassy, and colorful:
Foz Lizandro beach on the south side of town is the beachbreak swell magnet. There is always something there even when it is flat everywhere else. The beach is wide and beautiful:
This is Matadouro Beach, a nice little reef break that felt a lot like the reef spots lining La Jolla point in San Diego:
Looking south from Matadouro towards the next break down, Sao Sebastiao:
This point is the surf break closest to our house. 5 minute walk. It is called Algodio, and looks fun at a mid-tide (tide was too high and swell too small in this photo):
Our house had a rooftop patio with a sweet little charcoal BBQ. We fired it up and made grilled veggies for our first dinner:
