Gateway to the North Island's wine country

The drive from Mahia to Napier, along Hawke Bay, was beautiful.

An hour and a half of green rolling hills that reminded us of Paso Robles, with even fewer people.

Napier got leveled by a big earthquake in the 1920s, so when they rebuilt, they used the prevailing architecture type of the time: Art Deco. It is apparently a big architectural attraction. The town was just OK.

Here are a few shots of the Art Deco stuff
And this one
But the best part was finding this mannequin who was clearly made out to be a modern day French hipster. You can shake your head Aurel, but you know it is true. To be honest, I wish I had this getup for our big nautical-themed retirement party.
After an hour walk through Napier (that's all it takes) we headed to Havelock North, a little town about a half hour away. Havelock North is very charming. Sort of a St Helena or Yountville feel to it.

Here is Cam in front of a gourmet food shop in Havelock North.
And here is your correspondent enjoying a cold Guinness in the local pub, whilst viewing the very un-civilized Rugby League match between the Dragons and the Broncos.

Tomorrow we taste wine.
